The Art Of Sculpture

Sculpture is the oldest form of art that exists. Before our pre-historic ancestors even had a verbal language they had a pictorial one and they carved it on stones so that future generations would know they existed and know at least a little about their lives and beliefs. Sculpture has remained a way for people to communicate and express themselves every since.

 Throughout history sculpture has been used to teach, to inform, and to guide the masses.  These three dimensional forms have been considered to be high art through out the ages and were used to venerate deities and remember loved ones that had died.

Sculptures found at archeological sites have shown us that no matter how different the civilizations were one thing they all had in common was a love of decoration. Sculpture was used to decorate useful items and to make homes more comfortable in every civilization. 

 Today the art of sculpture is still recognized although now sculpture is used more as decoration than as personifications of gods and goddesses. People still use ancient sculpting methods that haven’t changed in centuries to create stunning pieces of public and private art. Some sculptors still use the same materials the first sculptors used like stone or wood and some choose to use the most modern, high tech materials available. Regardless of the materials they choose modern sculptors are part of a grand tradition that connects past and present. Being a sculptor means becoming a part of that grand tradition.

 Once you start learning to sculpt and join this illustrious group you might find that you want to continue sculpting, and that you’d like to make a living it.
